Je t’aime… moi non plus
Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin
“I Love You… Neither Do I”
Originally penned in 1967 by Serge Gainsbourg during a brief affair with Brigitte ‘And God Created Woman’ Bardot, Je t’aime… moi non plus was re-recorded in 1968 with his then-lover Jane Birkin.
(Bardot had begged Gainsbourg not to release their version, among the reasons for her insistence was her husband, German businessman Gunter Sachs.)
“I only sang it because I didn’t want anybody else to sing it,” said Birkin.
Rumour has it the 40-year-old Gainsbourg met the 22-year-old Birkin on the set of Slogan and on their first date, they toured the bars of Paris, including a transvestite bar, and fell asleep drunk. The pair were married in less than a year.
Bardot’s version was not released until 1986.
